The YouTube Power Hour Podcast

We’re giving you more ways to find awesome video ideas than you can handle! If you’ve ever wondered how to create videos people will want to watch, then wonder no more, because sustainable fashion YouTuber Alyssa Beltempo is here! She’s a scrappy, up and coming YouTuber who’s built her channel up to almost 80k subscribers with a few viral hits along the way. She’s talking all about how she picks video topics that eventually go viral and how to film your videos on the cheap!

“Use what you have until you ABSOLUTELY have to buy something new” - Alyssa Beltempo

Alyssa was blogging about fashion and doing wardrobe styling for years before joining YouTube. But 2 years ago she wanted to get off the fast fashion roller coaster and switch to slow fashion and sustainable style because it’s better for the world. So she started her channel. Things started slow and gradual but then she had her first viral video. About 9 months into her channel, she threw up a video about wearing a shirt dress in 20 different ways and it blew up. It affirmed for her that consistency - posting a new video every Sunday - wins in the end, and sticking to her niche of slow fashion is her path to gaining traction. She now has 77k subscribers and a few viral videos under her belt to talk about!

“Even if I only have 1 person watching, maybe they’ll consider shopping less. Ultimately that's what it’s all about.” - Alyssa Beltempo

She started YouTube with a mission to help people shop less and adopt sustainable fashion so at the start her view count wasn’t a huge priority for her. Now she’s seeing her channel as a way to impact more lives with her message. She didn’t start off super polished, her first videos were filmed with an iPhone and an old camera, but it’s been great to see her improve her setup and roll out new video ideas over her YouTube career. In today’s episode, we’re going to be breaking down a number of her viral videos and how she comes up with the ideas for the topics and film concepts for her videos, how to succeed with super minimal filming set up, working with ethical brands for sponsored videos, and so much more. Enjoy!

“The comment section is a treasure trove of information” - Erika Vieira

Growth can come in many shapes and sizes. Sometimes it’s slow and steady. Sometimes it’s all at once. This week’s guest, hair and beauty YouTuber Bianca Renee, turned an authentic moment into a viral hit which catapulted her into the curly hair niche she was meant for. We’re going to take a look behind-the-scenes to see how what she learned through her life prepared her for YouTube success, how she was able to turn a viral hit into a consistent channel, her experiences of working with brands like getting her face on an in-store ad, working with a manager and so much more!

“I don’t know any brand that only uses one influencer, so there’s no reason we all can’t succeed.”

Bianca says she started her youtube career by accident. At the time she was doing marketing and promotions for different companies and one day she had found some products that really worked for her curly hair. So she opened up her laptop and recorded a video about the rare find in her mother’s kitchen. That video went viral, hit a couple hundred thousand views in no time, and that gave her the idea to continue expanding on that thread, talking about how to apply the products and different things about curly hair. Even though that first real video went viral, she wasn’t all-in on YouTube yet. As a matter of fact, she didn’t follow up that video until 6 months later!

“I know I’m not the only one struggling with these things, so if I can reach someone else going through it, that’s what makes it worth it.”

When she started uploading twice a week that’s when she started to see the growth to her subscribers and engagement. About 2 years ago she committed to YouTube full-time when she realized that she could make more money at home focusing on making her curly hair videos. In this episode, she talks about her YouTube influencer journey, helping smaller YouTube influencers navigate the world of brand sponsorships, how to find and work with a manager to get you the best brand deals for your channel, and so much more! Enjoy!

I love talking to my successful bootcampers! I get to do two amazingly fun things: showcase these incredible women who I love so much, and also give you direct access to what made the biggest differences for them and grew their channels. Beauty YouTuber Michele Wang is here to share her journey from knitwear, to leaving her full-time job to pursue YouTube and her secrets for making videos built for engagement and growth!

“I can’t emphasize consistency enough! Your viewers start to depend on it.”

Michele came to the bootcamp in August 2018. She was getting burned out at her full-time job and saw the potential with YouTube as that income was going up. So she decided to join to capitalize on YouTube more and pursue going full-time. Before that, she was doing different things dabbling on YouTube. She would make knitwear videos but the process was slow and not sustainable so in February 2017, after moving to Las Vegas, she decided to switch her niche to beauty and makeup. Though she switched to makeup, she wasn’t putting much intention into niching or picking video topics, but a video recommendation she saw inspired her to join the bootcamp, and the rest is history.

“Treat YouTube like a business. Credit card debt is the worst way to fund your business!”

She had about 16k subscribers before joining the bootcamp. Now she has over 90k subscribers and is a full-time YouTuber, making money with AdSense and affiliates. The bootcamp gave her new tools and the confidence that the niche she picked was the right choice. In this episode we’ll talk about how she made the transition from her job to full-time on YouTube, her insane and consistent way of making videos, and her biggest takeaways from the bootcamp. Enjoy!

“Negativity doesn’t really bother me. I have pretty thick skin at this point, I don’t care.”

There’s no such thing as an overnight success, but every once in awhile, something happens that just makes you wonder. Like this week’s guest who decides to throw up a video, and not even optimizes thumbnails or descriptions, but 10 days later gets millions of views! Biochemist and YouTuber Kenna is here to break down that overnight success and she’s telling us why it was actually several years in the making, and giving you the clues to make that a process you can follow for your next viral hit!

“Once I stopped questioning myself, I started making videos that did a lot better.”

When Kenna started out on YouTube, she was looking for an outlet to answer the common questions she was getting from her skincare line customers - she started her own skincare line at 18 while she was still getting her degree. She wasn’t growing then, so she didn’t put much attention and effort into it. But one day she decided to record herself giving her Biochemist’s review of Jaclyn Hill lipstick, and that video ended up getting 1.4 million views! With that viral hit, she was forced to grow up as an influencer real fast. And when she followed it up with part 2 of the review, which got almost 1 million views, she decided to take her channel more seriously.

“I’m taking baby steps to grow to the level where my viral growth has gone.”

She’s now running her own skincare line that she sold to the natural skincare company she now works for and at 23 is overseeing a number of product lines, from quality control to distribution to retail outlets. She’s now at over 200k subscribers and is using the feedback from her followers and subscribers to upgrade her channel and how she approaches her content over time. In this episode, we’ll be talking about that viral hit, how she’s following it up to become a full-fledged YouTube influencer, and how you can use your superpowers to carve out a relevant and substantial niche for yourself on YouTube. Enjoy!

“I wouldn’t do content on someone else’s skincare brand because I wouldn’t be able to authentically speak about it.”

Part 2 of our amazing conversation with Natalia Taylor is here! In part one we dove deep into her origin story, and how her YouTube success forced her to change for the better. Now we’re diving into what videos solidified her comeback and we’re getting a front-row view into her genius for picking video ideas, how she creates content and the secrets for growth and making herself a hit machine! If you loved the last episode, this one will blow you away. We’re getting technical!

“If you make content that people are interested in, they will watch it and you’ll have job security.”

It may look simple and obvious now that she’s made a comeback and doubled her subscribers, but when she came back, she had a dead channel. Her old videos were getting a trickle of views, and the new her wasn’t jiving for some. Sometimes it was discouraging to see the subscriber numbers plummet when she posted new content. But she kept with it. She kept her positive attitude and eventually got to a turning point. She made a video on exposing America’s Next Top Model and that started her rise again. She maintained that momentum and struck gold again by hitting her most-watched video which was also a sponsored video about Zodiac Signs. It got over 5 million views! She wasn’t only back, but now, she’s sitting pretty at almost 1.8 million subscribers.

“Being original, new and innovative is always my #1 priority”

In this episode, we pick up from where we left off and talk about what videos sparked her comeback, her insanely genius process for coming up with video ideas, the surprising way she shoots and edits her videos and so much more. We also get a moment where she’s completely open and raw about her experience being a successful YouTube influencer, that you’re going to want to hear if you’re interested in going down the same path. Enjoy!

“I don’t consume that much content. I just produce it. That’s the beauty of being an artist.”
