Hey YouTube Power Hour Squad! In this episode, I’m going to share with you some of what went on behind the scenes in 2020 and let you know what I have left to come in 2021!

A lot of us can’t wait for 2020 to be over, but I bet if you look back, many of you probably made some serious changes and had to SERIOUSLY look at where you were in your life and where you wanted to go. Maybe the pandemic helped you start your YouTube channel. Maybe it helped you take it more seriously. Maybe it helped you realize how you can make money online.

In 2020, I launched my new eBook and enrolled nearly 200 women (and some men) into my bootcamp. I was able to bring on some amazing guest speakers into my bootcamp coaching calls. I also re-launched my 1:1 coaching program for women who are serious about going full-time on YouTube or hit their next milestone, and I was reminded how much I LOVE the 1:1 coaching aspect of my business.

I also checked something off my bucket list this year by speaking at VidSummit and I’m super proud of the presentation I was able to put together and honored for the opportunity.

Finally, on the podcast, I upped my game and started 2 episodes a week and had some AMAZING guests, including Chalene Johnson, olympian Shawn Johnson, Hyram, the GlamTwinz, Dr. Dray, Sarah Therese, Lydia Elise Millen… and SO many more!

So what’s new in 2021? I’m gonna be BRINGING it on YouTube with strategy videos and tons more bonus content.

To my listeners and subscribers: thank you so much for all the support you’ve been giving me these last few years and thank you for sticking around, for all of your messages, etc.! It means so much to me when you take time out of your day to share with me! Thank you!

Hey YouTube Power Hour Squad! In this episode, I’m going to talk about the 5 things you have to think about if you’ve been on YouTube for YEARS without seeing any growth. My guest this week was Camille Collazo, who was on YouTube for 6 years without seeing much growth, but it was her passion for creation and her determination that kept her going. It took a global pandemic for Camille to blow up on YouTube when she transitioned to frugal living hacks and content around money-saving tips. Her journey is proof that with resilience and determination, you can be successful on YouTube with the right tools!

Here are the 5 things to think about if your channel is STUCK:

  1. You need to have a VISION: visualize the channel you want to have, who your ideal subscriber is, etc. Without a vision, you have no path to success.
  2. Make a commitment to your channel: once you make a commitment and treat your channel like a full-time job, even if it’s not!
  3. Be self-aware: you need to be honest with yourself, whether it’s knowing if YouTube is the right platform for you, or whether it’s if your niche is right for you, you need to assess yourself as a content creator and what isn’t working for you.
  4. Are you passionate about YouTube? You might be really passionate about your topic or niche, but in order to be successful on YouTube, you need to be passionate about creating and sharing videos. This platform is not a good fit for everyone!
  5. Know when you need help: You need to know what your strengths and weaknesses are. If you suck at editing videos, hire an editor! Such at making thumbnails? Hire a graphic designer! Need someone to help you with your channel? Hire a coach!

Are you ready to implement these 5 tips?

Camille Collazo’s story is one of true resilience and dedication. Originally from Puerto Rico, Camille moved to the United States at the age of 18 and joined the military, despite not knowing any English. In 2013 while attending film school to study cinematography, Camille started a YouTube Channel. After 6 years of being on YouTube, she rebranded her channel at the beginning of quarantine to share content on frugal living, saving money and personal finance after a 90K loss of income due to COVID, and her channel FINALLY started to grow. Her channel now has over 100K subscribers.

Hey YouTube Power Hour Squad! Ready to start (or grow) your YouTube channel in 2021? Are you wanting to grow your online presence? There is no other platform better than YouTube to grow your online presence. It might take A LOT of work... A lot of time and commitment, but if you do it right, all that work is worth it!

  1. YouTube is a search engine, and people out there are searching for the exact kind of content you want to create!
  2. You can literally connect to anybody in an intimate way. Being able to watch someone and hear someone through video creates a stronger, quicker, and stronger connection!
  3. You can turn your passion into a career. If you aren’t satisfied with your current career path, YouTube allows you to showcase your talents and passions to grow an audience and monetize them.
  4. It evolves with you. My guest this week, Sazan Hendrix, has been able to create content that evolves with her throughout her different stages in life.
  5. You can use YouTube as a vehicle to grow your audience quickly and use it for your business, your podcast, whatever!

Are you in high school or college and looking to start a YouTube channel? This episode is for YOU! This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Vanessa Nagoya, who started her channel at the age of 15. She is now 18 and has nearly 400k subscribers!

So what can you do as a Gen Z’er looking to get started on YouTube?

  1. JUST GET STARTED. Start creating content! Even if that means you never post it! The only way you’re going to get good at YouTube is to just start DOING it.
  2. BE AUTHENTIC. Be yourself. Don’t be anybody you’re not! Finding your voice is so important at your age. Show who YOU are and what makes you you! Your audience will connect with YOU and want to watch you: your quirks, insecurities, fears, and everything in between!
  3. SHARE your life experiences. Being in high school and college has SO many firsts and so many milestones, and you want to document that! People your age can relate to these milestones!
  4. You DON’T have to have a niche! Don’t be worried about boxing yourself into a niche. Having a niche is good for when you get older, but if you’re in high school, you don’t need it! Your niche is your life as you are growing up.

Just enjoy yourself, be authentically yourself, and if this stays a hobby, great! If it turns into something more, great!

Are you a high school or college student? Are you looking to be successful on YouTube?

Vanessa Nagoya is only 18 years old and has 400k subscribers on her lifestyle and fashion channel. She started her channel around the age of 15 because she LOVED watching YouTube and had a passion for video production. Her first ever video was a random vlog, inspired by fellow young YouTuber Emma Chamberlain. Vanessa used YouTube as a hobby and as something to do in her spare time to document her high school milestones.

This week, I interviewed Isabella Demarko and she told me all about the viral video that changed her life and her YouTube channel forever. Let’s talk about what you need to know if you’re looking for your next viral hit.

Why did Isabella’s video go viral?

  1. The video is visually stimulating and keeps viewers engaged
  2. It told a story. This video was about her hair journey and how she grew it out for six years. Viewers want to stick around until the end to see the end of the story!
  3. It’s vulnerable. People connect to true, authentic emotions.
  4. It’s fast paced. She told a 6 year long journey in 13 minutes, moving quickly from one visual stimulation to the next.
  5. She put in the extra time necessary. Every single second of this video was well-thought out, and it took hours and hours for her to create such a cinematic piece.

The biggest mistake you can make on your channel is not acting on your ideas. You DON’T have to wait until you are good enough or big enough or experienced enough to jump on an idea. You never know… it could be the video that changes YOUR channel!

Isabella Demarko is a UK-based YouTuber and actress. Her channel is a haircare, beauty, style, and lifestyle channel with 323K subscribers. Isabella’s YouTube journey started when she was 14 years old, when she created a YouTube channel because she felt the need to be seen and heard. As a teenager, Isabella was shy and felt isolated and struggled to be accepted by her peers. It took 9 years for her to start taking her channel seriously, and one viral video changed her career forever.

This week I had one of my bootcamp students, Laura Jane Atelier, on the show. She shared the story of her journey from blogger to struggling YouTuber to SUCCESSFUL YouTuber.

One of the biggest reasons Laura was finally able to break out of her rut and see tremendous success was the total transformation she made in her mindset.

Sometimes, we get in our own way when it comes to YouTube. We get stubborn. We think we know what we’re doing. But it’s important that you keep an open mind when it comes to making necessary changes in your channel for growth.

Are you struggling with staying stuck in your own way? Not seeing growth? Let me know!

Laura Jane Atelier was in my FIRST group of bootcampers, and she’s here to talk about her journey from blogger to YouTuber. Her channel is all about vintage fashion, lifestyle, and culture. When she started her blog and instagram, she spent a few years figuring out her niche, and as she became more and more active on YouTube, it took her even longer to really hone in further on her niche there.

You would think someone like Shawn Johnson, a well-known olympian, would have had an easy time on YouTube, right? WRONG! Despite having an established following as a professional athlete, Shawn’s decision to start a YouTube channel proved to be a lot more work than she initially thought. Her instagram followers didn’t immediately hop over to YouTube, and at first, her channel was struggling. HOW can that be?

  1. You have to constantly be creating content… a MINIMUM of one video a week, because without that, you cannot grow. Every video you upload has potential to be your next viral video, and each video means more chances of your video being picked up by the algorithm. Naturally, the more content, the better.
  2. The initial growth (and then later… the stalling of growth) is HARD. Shawn only had 50k subscribers after 2 years with her channel. Even a celebrity like Shawn has to put in the same work as everyone else to take their channel to the next level. Once Shawn decided to go ALL IN, Shawn leveraged her celebrity status to do collaborations with other celebrities and YouTubers. She also did A LOT of trending videos.
  3. Balancing working with brands and satisfying the needs and wants with the brands while still being authentic to your audience.
  4. Finding the balance as a vlogger to share what your audience wants to see while also protecting your own privacy. Once you throw it out there, people will say whatever they want to say about you.

For Shawn Johnson, YouTube is truly a balancing act (see what I did there? Shawn Johnson is an olympic balance beam champion), but it has given her SO much freedom and a new way to serve a different audience.

What are you struggling with?

This week I spoke with Desiree Martinez, a social media marketer with over 10 years experience, about why YouTube is such an amazing opportunity for women in the CRAZY world around us in the year 2020.

There are going to be more and more people coming onto YouTube… mark my words! YouTube is the future of entertainment. If you want to get in front of people, if you have a message you want to share or a business you want to build, YouTube is the way to expand your social media presence. You can TRULY establish yourself and your personal brand with YouTube.

ANYBODY can be on YouTube. If you have a phone with a camera, you can be on YouTube. I recently interviewed Hyram on the podcast, who has over 3 million subscribers and STILL films on his iphone!

If you are able to build out a niched audience on YouTube, you CAN earn money and build a career from it! As a woman, you can work from home, you can be there for your kids, you can help support your family, all by building a following online, and YouTube is the way to go. There’s no barrier to entry to YouTube. There’s nobody there to tell you “no,” except yourself!

Have you ever thought about how much money you could make on a viral video?

In my interview with Kallie Branciforte, she told me all about her HUGE viral hit: a gift wrapping hacks video that goes viral every single season. She’s now at over 31 MILLION views on this one video. Kallie credits the success of this video to the content of the video AND the thumbnail.

So how has this video helped her channel? It has definitely helped boost her subscribers (she sees a spike in subscribers during the holiday season), but also, it’s earned her $65,000. Yup. You saw that right. Kallie has earned enough money from ONE video to buy two cars. Amazing!

What could a viral hit do for your channel?

Have you ever thought about hiring a manager or an agent? You’re going to want to listen to my interview with Cassandra Bankson, who had a cautionary tale about hiring a manager.

Cassandra put her trust in the wrong person who didn’t have her best interests in mind and whose values did not align with her own.

If you’re looking to hire a manager, make sure that they align with your core values, and for your own protection, make sure they aren’t controlling your finances. Make sure you interview several candidates, ask for references, do a background check, and figure out if they have values that align with yours and if they share the same goals as you.

The more stories like Cassandra’s are told, the less likely it will happen to another creator.

What did you think about Cassandra’s story? Let me know!

She considers herself an “Acne Warrior” on a mission to help others take actionable steps to embrace and care for their skin. This week I interviewed one of my bootcampers, Trina Albus!

Are you struggling to find your niche? Having trouble finding something to focus on?

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Figure out what your strengths are, what your experiences are, what you’re uniquely qualified to speak on. What makes you unique?
  2. Who are you creating content for? Who is your audience? How old are they? What is their life experience like?
  3. Look at your data: which videos do better? What is the subject matter of those videos? What are people watching the most on your channel?

By knowing who YOU are and who you are creating for, you can help narrow down what you should be creating.

Were you inspired by Trina? Are you ready to narrow down that niche? Let me know!

This week I interviewed my first set of twins - the GORGEOUS Kelsey and Kendra, a.k.a the GlamTwinz, and they talked a TON about being authentic, and how they credit their authenticity to their success on YouTube.

So what’s so important about authenticity? People don’t come to YouTube to watch someone phony… that’s what television is for.

Your energy translates well on camera, and your viewers are going to sense it. If you’re not being authentic, or creating content that doesn’t truly speak to who YOU are, your audience will feel that. By being unapologetically YOU; by being who YOU are, you will form connections with your audience. If you’re too focused on pleasing people, or on creating something that doesn’t truly align with you, your viewers will sense it.

If you’re creating content that you love and that you are passionate about, your channel will be much more sustainable, and the passion you have for what you're doing will translate to your videos.

Were you inspired by Kelsey and Kendra? Are you ready to commit to authenticity?

Hey YouTube Power Hour Squad! Who’s ready for more YTPH episodes?

This week I interviewed Kimmy Hughes of She’s in Her Apron, and one of the things she really stressed was that her channel totally started to take off when she really started to focus on her audience, and this is starting to become a recurring theme on the podcast.

Understanding your audience is crucial to your success on YouTube, and the more you know them, connect with them, and understand what they want from you, the more likely they will be to keep coming back.

How can you understand your audience better?

  1. Ask your audience and actually listen to what they have to say
  2. Study your analytics and what they can tell you about how much people are watching your videos
  3. Take what you are seeing in your analytics and create MORE of it.

Hey YouTube Power Hour Squad! Who’s ready for more YTPH episodes?

What happens when your channel grows really quickly, but then stalls out and gets stagnant?

I talked with Shanygne a.k.a Too Much Mouth this week on the podcast, and she talked about how she reinvigorated her beauty YouTube channel by truly bringing her personality into her channel, diversifying her content, and incorporating more of herself and her interests into her channel.

Shanygne also stressed the importance of knowing what her audience wants. Don’t just ask your audience what they want from you… really listen to them. YouTube is always changing and evolving, so in order to avoid a stagnant channel, it’s important that you know what the trends are, what your listeners are watching on other channels, and apply that to your own channel.

So what should you do if your channel is stagnant?

  1. Listen to your audience’s insight to what they like and don’t like, both from you and others.
  2. Go with your strengths: what is it that YOU have that nobody else has?
  3. Know what trends are going on in your own niche and in your own community.

Ready to stand out from the crowd and reinvent yourself?

Blessed with “the gift of gab,” Too Much Mouth, aka Shanygne Maurice, is a beauty and lifestyle YouTuber based in New York City. Her channel has over 226k subscribers and 20 million views. Shanygne started off as a blogger, and started her YouTube channel in 2015 initially as a makeup and beauty channel, but she has since expanded to more lifestyle and entertainment. She has been a full-time YouTuber since about 2016, however, she admits that she didn’t truly have a firm grasp until around 2019.

Hey YouTube Power Hour Squad! Who’s ready for more YTPH episodes?

How many people start their YouTube channels and focus on beauty? A lot of people enjoy makeup and skincare, but it’s not quite their TRUE passion. This was the case with Stephanie Harlowe. She started her YouTube channel as a beauty channel, but realized that her true passion was true crime and history, so she took a gamble and made a pivot.

What is amazing about Stephanie is that she spends a ridiculous amount of time researching her videos so that her viewers leave with no unanswered questions. She doesn’t outsource anything, and works early in the morning to get it done.

So why does Stephanie spend SO much time on her channel? It’s very simple. She loves it. That’s the beauty of YouTube.

When it comes to YouTube, you need to find your zone of genius. For Stephanie, her true crime channel IS her zone of genius: the research, the editing, the analysis, and the presentation.

What’s your zone of genius?

Welcome to another YouTube Power Hour First! I’m thrilled to have my first true crime YouTuber on the show! Stephanie Harlowe has the reputation for having some of the most well-researched and thought-out true crime videos on YouTube, putting a great emphasis on leaving the viewer with no questions about the case. Since gaining a following on YouTube, Stephanie has been featured on Investigation Discovery’s The Missing Pieces. It is her goal to give a voice to the voiceless, and raise awareness about true crime cases both large and small. Stephanie’s channel has roughly 325k subscribers and 45 million views.

Hey YouTube Power Hour Squad! Who’s ready for more YTPH episodes?

Let’s talk about vlogging. In my latest interview, I had DaNelle Wolford from Weed ‘em and Reap on the show, and she has totally revolutionized the vlogging game.

Things to consider before you start a vlogging channel:

  1. What is interesting about you and your life?
  2. Are you skilled with editing or filmmaking? Can you turn the mundane into something interesting?
  3. Do you have interesting storylines?

This is not to say that you can’t incorporate vlogging elements to your channel! The more practice you get with this, the more successful you will be.

It’s another YouTube Power Hour first! My first ever farming YouTuber kicks off the new season of the show. My guest this week is the wonderful DaNelle from Weed ‘em and Reap! On a mission to create a farm of her own, DaNelle persuaded her husband to purchase a home on an acre of land and transform it into their very own suburban farm. They provide eggs, milk, meat, fruit, nuts, and veggies all on their one-acre farm in Arizona. DaNelle is known as the "goat lady" and is passionate about helping people own milking goats even on the smallest lot. DaNelle and her family are known for their daily Youtube videos of life on their mini-farm and her blog at Weed 'em & Reap where she writes about the backyard farming and cooking from scratch.

Kassandra started her YouTube channel in 2014 with no real dreams or goals. YouTube for her was a way for her to share her passion, to teach, and to help her get studio jobs. She didn’t realize that online work was a legitimate “thing.” Her channel had very humble beginnings: she knew nothing about filming, editing, or marketing, she didn’t have any equipment, and she recorded by taping her cell phone against the wall so it would stay in place. She treated her videos like her own personal practice. Her growth was a slow and steady process where every month was better than the previous month. There was no real dramatic increase or viral hit that catapulted her channel to success. Despite this, she still made a decent income even when she didn’t have a high subscriber count, because right away she quickly learned how to monetize even her small audience through paid programs, courses, and custom videos.

Hey YouTube Power Hour Squad!

Did you miss my YouTube LIVE? Fear not, this week’s solocast is a replay of my YouTube Live! Grab your notebook and get comfy, this episode is packed with advice you won’t want to miss!

Let’s talk about MINDSET. One of the things I’ve found is that your mindset can literally make or break you on YouTube. You can have all the editing, filming, and SEO skills in the world, but if your mindset isn’t right, NONE of that matters.

What’s stopping you? What’s the worst case scenario? Why are you choosing to play it safe rather than walking through your fear toward your goal?

Brett Larkin’s YouTube journey began in 2012 when she started uploading her yoga sequences and postures so that she would remember them, but she quickly discovered that despite only using YouTube as storage for her videos, they were starting to gain views and comments. Her background in dance and tech, plus her passion for fitness and yoga seemed like a perfect fit for YouTube where she could easily fuze her passions, and everything started to snowball from there. After a truly life-changing experience at YouTube's Creator Day, Brett realized she could make money by selling courses. Her channel now has over 300k subscribers, and built a 7-figure business out of her online courses!

Hey YouTube Power Hour Squad!

Did you miss my YouTube LIVE? Fear not, this week’s solocast is a replay of my YouTube Live! Grab your notebook and get comfy, this episode is packed with advice you won’t want to miss!

We are a full 6 months into 2020, which has been the craziest year for just about everyone. I don’t think anyone could have anticipated anything that has happened this year. Now that we are at the halfway point of this year, let’s step back and take a minute to assess where you want to be in the next 6 months. In this post-COVID world, it’s now more important than ever to be able to make money from home, and a lot of people have decided that being a full-time YouTuber is their vehicle to be able to do just that.

So what can you learn from this episode? Let’s ask ourselves the following:

  • Where do you want your channel to fit into your life?
  • What analytics should you be paying attention to? What numbers should you be reaching towards?
  • The choices you make today will take effect later. Sometimes that even means the videos you make today won’t take off until next year. The only thing that won’t help you is doing NOTHING. So… what are you doing NOW that will help you down the road?
  • Are you where you wanted to be? Are you on track to where you want to be?

I have had some amazing guests on the podcast, and I am now booking guests for the upcoming season of the YouTube Power Hour! Who are your favorite YouTubers? Who do you want to see on the show? Send your requests HERE.

I have also opened up my FREE 60-Minute Road to 100k Masterclass, where you can learn my ZERO TO INFLUENCE SYSTEM that I teach in my bootcamp, and the 3 biggest mistakes you might be making RIGHT NOW that is stifling your growth on YouTube.

Hey YouTube Power Hour Squad!

Did you miss my YouTube LIVE? Fear not, this week’s solocast is a replay of my YouTube Live!

As you all know, we have a lot going on in our world right now, but I feel that out of that darkness will come light and black voices will be amplified. I want to do my part. I want to do better. My goal and my mission with my bootcamp and with my podcast is to share the stories of women and their journeys through YouTube.

I’m going to be recording new episodes this summer, and I want to feature MORE black YouTube creators, share their stories, and amplify their voices. Let me know whose stories you want to hear on the podcast.

Here are some of the black women I have already featured on the show:

Bianca Renee: How to Niche Down on YouTube For Faster Growth

Asia Jackson: From Actress To Activist, Using the YouTube Platform for Social Issues

CKey: Are you Being Authentically You on YouTube?

LaToya Codner: Tips for Being Yourself on YouTube

Raven Elyse: The Secret to YouTube Success that you need to know

Shan Boodram: How to start a good YouTube Channel People Will Watch

What is the Clickable Effect?

There are three components, two of which get talked about a lot, and a third one which I don’t feel like is talked about enough.

  1. Titles: it’s not just about the keyword!
  2. Thumbnails
  3. Topic of your video: what are you talking about in your videos? Is it something people are actually interested in? It is something your true fan is interested in? Is it timely or relevant?

These three things work together to get people to actually want to click on your video.

In this episode, I’m going to go over the Clickable Effect, the stats you need to pay attention to, what makes a good title and thumbnail, the importance of having a clear topic, clickbait, and more.

In today’s solocast, I want to continue our conversation from the last solocast about creating content during a global pandemic. Everyone is affected by this quarantine somehow, and I want to help you through this. In this episode, I go over my 5 tips to creating YouTube content during a global crisis.

When you get inspired, you can work for HOURS. When I was brainstorming about this episode, suddenly I realized I had pages and pages of things to say… that turned in a FREE 31+ page eBook all about creating content during a crisis.

My free guide also includes over 75 video ideas that you can apply to YOUR channel about how the Coronavirus has affected you, through the lens of your specific niche.

What are we going to do with this time that we have? What are the new habits we will create, and how can we implement them to help lead us to our vision?

Who’s ready for a super value-packed, deep and exciting episode about YouTube growth, from someone who’s seen it all for the past 6 years? I don’t think you’re ready! Fashion YouTuber, Erin Busbee aka Busbee Style is here and she was so generous with her time and with all her YouTube secrets. If you want to learn how to go from a trickle of views, to constantly over a million views a month and swimming in affiliate income, you’re in for a treat!

“If you can take more of a strategic approach, you can grow faster.”

Erin was working in TV news as a journalist, but after getting married and moving to Texas, that was a life she didn’t want to go back to. Instead of getting another job, her husband encouraged her to take that time to pursue her passion. She wasn’t sure what that was, but she knew what was on her heart was “helping women feel pretty”. That led her to start a business consulting women on their wardrobe - organizing their closets and being their personal shopper. The more it grew, the more restless she felt. She wanted to help even more women, and scale the business more and more. But scaling it by training others to do her job wasn’t giving her the satisfaction she desired. So, blogging and YouTube was born. That was in 2014, now almost 6 years later, she has almost 300k subscribers and gets over 1 million views a month helping women in their late 30s to 60s look and feel pretty!

“Keep pushing your creativity and adding freshness and excitement for your regular viewers.”

Even though her channel is at almost 300k subscribers now, a year later after her channel started, in 2015, she was at 10k subscribers and barely growing. At a rewardStyle event, she met someone who grew her channel really fast, and that gave her the inspiration that it was possible for her too. So she dove into research and brought a new level of focus and energy to her channel and it started to pay off. She doubled her subscribers in 2018 to 86k, and now, not even 2 years later, she’s shattered that record. In this episode, we’re diving deep into her process. She breaks down exactly how she coordinates her team, exactly how she uses analytics - and how you can too - to optimize her videos for people to watch from start to end, she breaks down how she creates her viral hits so predictably for a niche that isn’t very large, she breaks down how she runs her blog, YouTube, her IG, and social media seamlessly - and has all of them thriving, and so much more. Enjoy!

“Give your viewers what they want and need and you’ll perform better.”

Whether you’re a woman over 50, or just hungry to make it big on YouTube, you’re going to want to check this out! Lifestyle YouTuber Schellea Fowler, aka Fabulous50s, is sharing her secrets and going deep in lessons on how she grew to almost 600k subscribers in less than 3 years in a niche you really wouldn’t expect. Gain the upper hand by learning all you can in this week’s episode!

“What’s kept me going is knowing I’m helping women feel like they’ve got a lot more life left to live.”

Schellea got inspired to start on YouTube after she and her husband sold their business and retired when she was 49. They went on to travel, live it up and do all the things they dreamed of doing. But the problem was that after enjoying herself non-stop, without a new goal to chase, it became boring for her. So she started her channel, in July 2017, to have an impact at scale, taking what she does face-to-face with her clients and doing it on YouTube. She focused her niche on women over 50 and got to work. Initially, she was kind of shy and afraid to put herself out there. She wanted people to watch her videos, but she was afraid of being seen. But she pushed through and after 6 months of doing it, she felt more comfortable with boldly sharing her message, and that reflected in her channel’s growth. One video blew up to over 2 million views and her channel blew up as well. Now she has almost 600 subscribers in a little more than 2 years!

“The turning point for my YouTube success was definitely when I finally felt comfortable with myself.”

In this episode, Schellea breaks down the philosophy behind her channel and gives us her insights and lessons into not just growing SUPER fast on YouTube, but building a channel you’ll be proud of that will stand the test of time. Enjoy!

“Feeling solid within yourself helps you appreciate what you have instead of always wanting more.”

Hey YouTube Power Hour Squad, I have a special BONUS episode for you today. In today's solocast, I'm going to talk about COVID-19 and what it means for content creators.

We are ALL affected by this whether it's our health, our jobs, or the economy. There are a lot of unknowns right now, and that makes people panic. It's scary. My heart and my prayers go out to anyone who is struggling right now.

There's not a lot that we can really control right now. But there are a few things you CAN control, and that's what we have to focus on.

What can you control?

1. Your mind and how you think about this

2. Your actions as a result of these changes

We WILL get through this. It might be different on the other side. But human beings are incredibly resilient, and we will come out of this with unique solutions to the problems we are facing today.

As a content creator and influencer, you are a leader in your community. Now is the time to lead. Whether you are a beauty, fashion, or fitness content creator, you can still connect, comfort, entertain, and educate. Now that people are home more, they will be consuming more content.

You owe it to yourself, to your audience, to your goals, to your dreams to keep creating content. There is a silver lining, I promise.

If this message resonates with you, take this as an opportunity to study, to practice, to invest in yourself, to keep going, and keep creating content.

Let's continue the conversation on my instagram @beautyandthevlog, or in my Facebook Group! I love connecting with you and keeping the dialogue open.

She got bitten by the YouTube bug in 2012 when she was hired by Howcast to do a series on kissing, that series went onto be a hit, getting 35 million views per video. She knew she was onto something so she started her channel. But it wasn’t until she was laid off her job as deputy editor at Star Magazine that she started taking her channel seriously. When the video she did on Red Table Talk blew up, getting 100k views in 4 days, she knew she could be big and could carve out a living on YouTube. She’s been doing that full-time ever since.

- 31% work at marketing agencies that work with influencers
- 4% were PR agencies
- the rest were industry professionals

Of those surveyed, the most popular vertical represented is Fashion & Beauty (24%), followed by Travel & Lifestyle (13%), Health & Fitness (12%), Gaming (7%), Sports (5%), and Family, Parenting & Home (5%).

Growth

The Influencer Marketing Industry is set to grow to approximately $9.7B in 2020.
This means that the growth in influencer marketing over the current year, 2019 to 2020, has seen the estimated market size increase from $6.6 billion in 2019 to $9.7 billion in 2020. We are fast approaching a market size of $10 billion.

More than 380 new influencer marketing-focused agencies and platforms were established in 2019.
These were created in response to making this process easier - so more apps and companies have come on board to help with this partnership and relationship.

Regulation

Only 14% of influencer posts sampled were fully compliant with FTC guidelines.
If influencers don't improve their performance soon, there is a real danger that the FTC and CMA will start prosecuting rather than just warning and educating. However, it is an improvement on last year’s results, with only an 11% compliance rate.

Platforms and Engagement

Tik Tok is the MOST downloaded app in the apple store at 33 million downloads.

Micro and nano influencers have better engagement rates than influencers with 100k followers.
This is particularly evident on Instagram, where nano-influencers with fewer than 1,000 followers have seven times the engagement rate than mega-influencers with greater than 100,000 followers (7.2% vs. 1.1%). This pattern shows at every follower-number level in between these extremes.

300% more micro-influencers were utilized by large firms than in 2016

Almost 90% of all influencer campaigns include Instagram as part of the marketing mix.

Here are some excerpts from the report on the topic of engagement:

The shift from "celebrities" to influencers

The ratio of mega-influencers (with 1 million+ followers) to micro-influencers (with fewer than 100,000 followers) rose from 1:3 in 2016 to 1:10 in 2019. In other words, there are now 10 micro-influencers for every mega-influencer, compared with 3 micro-influencers per celebrity in 2016.

Working with Influencers

84% of respondents said that they upped their content.
That means they are hiring more and more influencers to create that content.

91% of our survey respondents believe influencer marketing to be an effective form of marketing.

2/3 of respondents are looking to INCREASE their spend on influencer marketing in 2020.
This is further proof that influencer marketing remains successful and shows no sign of slowing down. After a few years of robust growth in influencer marketing, you might have anticipated the movement of marketing budgets to "the next big thing." However, that hasn't happened yet – brands and marketers can still see the effectiveness of influencer marketing and are not yet searching for something new.

65% of our respondents measure the ROI from their influencer campaigns.
The most common measure of influencer marketing success is now conversions/sales.

Influencer fraud is of increasing concern to respondents.
More than 2/3 of respondents have experienced influencer fraud

Finding the Right Influencers

Finding influencers is the greatest challenge for those who run campaigns in-house.

Audience relationship is the most important factor when looking at influencers: 53% said that audience relationship is #1, the second most important factor is content production at 27%.

When evaluating influencers to use in campaigns, 41% of the survey respondents rated engagement or clicks as being their most important criterion compared with 26% who opted for content type/category or 25% who consider views/reach/impressions to be the most important.

More than half of survey respondents have worked with 10 or fewer influencers and a further 27% had worked with 10-50 influencers and 12% with 50-100 influencers.

Survey respondents spend more on micro-influencers today than they do on celebrities Respondents spent 47% of their influencer budget on micro-influencers (compared to just 23% for celebrity influencers).

What does this mean for you?

Bottom Line: This is an exciting study, and as an influencer you are in the right spot. These statistics should further encourage you in pursuing your career as a content creator. The marketing world is taking notice and is spending much more time, resources and money on influencer marketing. What does that mean? There are more and more opportunities for YOU, the influencer.

How do you take advantage of this? Continue to create good content, be clear on who you are serving and bring your best self to camera (if on YouTube).

Authenticity is everything today. When we follow the path that lights us up, we'll find success, no matter what. Our guest this week took that inspiration to a whole other level. She trashed over 200 videos and totally changed her niche, but instead of fading away to obscurity, she soared to almost 1 million subscribers! Lifestyle YouTuber Sarah Therese shares her story, process, and philosophy, plus all her video secrets!

“I’d rather make videos I’m hugely passionate about for 10k people than ones I'm not for 200k people.”

Sarah is a mom of three who has been on YouTube since she was a teenager. She used it as a way to find her own creative outlet away from her 2 siblings. In 2017 a conversation with a friend showed her that she could stay home with her kids and be creative and earn a decent income. So she dove into YouTube more seriously. She started in the beauty niche and racked up over 200k subscribers, and went full-time on YouTube. But over time life got more hectic and she grew away from beauty. So she changed the entire focus of her channel to health and beauty, and her subscribers came along for the ride! Since then she’s grown to almost 1 million subscribers and has several million views on her videos, all while running her one-woman show and homeschooling three kids!

“People actually come back to my channel for me and just the things I have to say.”

Sarah has a refreshing approach to YouTube that I think has made her impervious to the algorithms. When she switched niches entirely AND deleted hundreds of high performing videos, she gained subscribers, raving fans, brand deals, and revenue. It’s all because she’s passionate about her craft. She only focuses on improving for the next video, and she doesn’t stop to look at what others are doing. She doesn’t lead her life by what keywords are on-trend, she makes what she’s driven to make, no matter the performance. That’s worked out for her so far. You’re going to learn more about her philosophy, how she picks content ideas, her journey through changing niches and so much more. Enjoy!

“There are too many people who sit on their past videos. Come up with new content more often.”

What’s the TRUE power of a niche? You hear so often that picking a niche is super important, but how much of a difference does it really make? Our guest this week, lifestyle YouTuber Sienna Santer started vlogging her experience with #dormlife at Harvard and virtually overnight became a viral success. We’re peeling back all the layers and exposing every single detail. No stone will be left unturned!

“Who cares if I stand out a little bit, I’m here to do something different.”

Sienna was always passionate about filming and editing videos for her friends and family from all the YouTubers she enjoyed watching. So when she took her gap year and traveled, she decided to throw up a few videos. They didn’t do great for her growth, but she enjoyed the process. When she moved into Harvard, she filmed her moving and dorm room decoration and thought she’d make a vlog one day, but with a new school and environment, time got away from her and she shelved that idea. That was until December. She edited together the videos she filmed on her iPhone and uploaded it. It went viral. Within a week it got over a million views - it’s sitting at over 5 million views right now. In 2 weeks she went from 2k to 35k subscribers. Now she has over 332k subscribers!

“I have a really loyal fanbase that supports me no matter what I do.”

People were hungry for her Harvard student perspective, and not many people were sharing it. So that was the niche she decided to stay in and dominate. She had an opportunity being a new student to speak to an audience that wants to go to Harvard themselves one day, or who wants to know what it’s like from someone seeing everything for the first time. As she levels up, there’ll be more and more opportunities to show different perspectives as she herself changes. One thing we need to pause and remember is that there are many viral hits that go extinct when the fame dies down. But she’s done what all of them wish they could do: turn those curious viral viewers into an ongoing raving and caring fanbase who want to know about HER - the person. We’ll be talking about how she did that in this episode, and so much more. Enjoy!

“You’re not always going to be perfect. You’re going to slip up, and there’s a beauty in that.”

Worried that YouTube success is reserved for 20-year-olds? Well, no matter what age you’re at, you’re getting a ton of value from this episode! Health and Fitness YouTuber Dr. Becky Gillaspy is on this week and we’re talking about taking imperfect action and how that can pay off in a huge way. She started off focused on selling her programs but being on YouTube evolved her mission to provide her health knowledge and advice to women over 50. Now she has a thriving business and channel with over 275k subscribers! We’ll also be diving behind the scenes into her business, and how to use YouTube to blow it up! So you’re in for YouTube growth and business success in today's episode. Are you ready?

“Video is the best vehicle for building trust and authority.”

Dr. Becky started her channel to promote a product she put out on her website. She heard that adding videos to her blog would help her rank on Google. So she put up a couple of videos in 2012 and that was it, she never looked at it again… until she came back and saw that they got immense traction and growth. So she’d continue to upload content sporadically. It wasn’t until summer 2017 that she started taking her channel seriously, uploading once a week consistently. She found that she loved the creativity behind coming up with the right combination for a viral hit and decided to put her energy behind making her channel stand out. Now she’s at 275k subscribers and she’s not slowing down nor stopping!

“I now think about my title before I have the video conceptualized in my brain.”

She’s a strong advocate for starting where you are and taking that first step. In this episode we walked through one of her earlier videos where she was using a low quality borrowed camera, no microphone, zero lighting, noise everywhere - but that video has gone on to get 1.7 million views! We also cover how to find a place to belong and really thrive on YouTube no matter your age, how she gets 100 email opt-ins a day for her business, her failures and lessons along the way and so much more! Enjoy!

“I get comments from people in Australia and the UK and it reminds me: this is truly an amazing time to be in business.”

Are you confident about what you need to do to stay on top of your YouTube game? One thing's for sure about YouTube and that's the fact that the platform is constantly changing so you need to be able to adapt and change too if you want to grow. Not to fear though, I've got your back! In this solo episode, I'm sharing the top six trends to include in your 2020 YouTube strategy.

Originality is KEY
Audience expectations are higher than ever and they're tired of seeing the same old videos over and over. That means the more original you are, the more people take notice. In 2020 there is a lot of copycatting going on, but it's so worth the time it takes to get creative and put your own spin on different ideas. Some YouTubers I love who are on top of this:
- Alyssa Beltempo focuses on slow fashion, the opposite of fast fashion which is so popular.
- Natalia Taylor's video about zodiac signs was something unique and she consistently puts out videos that stand out.
- I just discovered Andrew Jihn. His channel is totally unexpected - finance mixed with magic.

Understanding Your Audience
You've heard it before but I'm saying it again because it's absolutely crucial. You need to know your audience inside out to be able to create content they will love. Again for the people in the back: understanding your audience is critical. Knowing your avatar or ideal listener means not only knowing their pain points but understanding what would pique their interest and get them clicking fast. In 2020 it's all about understanding what they're curious about.

The Celebrity Human Experiment
People are always going to be obsessed with the uber-rich and famous, rich. In 2020, creators that comment on or try the routines, schedules, diets, and exercises of the rich and famous will do well. Here are some of my faves:
- Mixed Makeup comments on celebrity skin routines
- Keltie O'Connor did a video about Tom Brady's workout and diet that went viral and now does a ton of those videos that do very well
- One of my bootcampers, Laura Jane Atelier, blew up her vintage channel by talking about the makeup and fashion of old Hollywood movie stars
- Abbey Sharp is a dietician that comments on famous celebrity and YouTuber diet habits

Niche-Related Trend Swiping
Before you run in on the latest video trend, check-in with yourself. Is it relevant? In 2020, creators who leverage trends to reach new audiences will get great results but only when they're applicable to your audience and your niche. Find ways to tweak the trends to be relevant to you or leave them for other creators.

Use Your Education or Profession
Leaning into your profession on YouTube isn't a new idea but more and more doctors, lawyers, engineers, therapists, etc. are getting onto the YouTube scene and using their education and expertise as a way to provide information in an entertaining way. In 2020, professionals who can capitalize on their knowledge to comment on trends will do well.

Thumbnails are King
If you've been here before you'll know how important thumbnails are. So many people get super excited to make an amazing video yet they shoot themselves in the foot by leaving the thumbnail as an afterthought. In 2020, incorporate thumbnails into your workflow and put just as much thought into it as your video. 50% of your success on YouTube has to do with how effective your thumbnails (and titles) are.

We’re giving you more ways to find awesome video ideas than you can handle! If you’ve ever wondered how to create videos people will want to watch, then wonder no more, because sustainable fashion YouTuber Alyssa Beltempo is here! She’s a scrappy, up and coming YouTuber who’s built her channel up to almost 80k subscribers with a few viral hits along the way. She’s talking all about how she picks video topics that eventually go viral and how to film your videos on the cheap!

“Use what you have until you ABSOLUTELY have to buy something new” - Alyssa Beltempo

Alyssa was blogging about fashion and doing wardrobe styling for years before joining YouTube. But 2 years ago she wanted to get off the fast fashion roller coaster and switch to slow fashion and sustainable style because it’s better for the world. So she started her channel. Things started slow and gradual but then she had her first viral video. About 9 months into her channel, she threw up a video about wearing a shirt dress in 20 different ways and it blew up. It affirmed for her that consistency - posting a new video every Sunday - wins in the end, and sticking to her niche of slow fashion is her path to gaining traction. She now has 77k subscribers and a few viral videos under her belt to talk about!

“Even if I only have 1 person watching, maybe they’ll consider shopping less. Ultimately that's what it’s all about.” - Alyssa Beltempo

She started YouTube with a mission to help people shop less and adopt sustainable fashion so at the start her view count wasn’t a huge priority for her. Now she’s seeing her channel as a way to impact more lives with her message. She didn’t start off super polished, her first videos were filmed with an iPhone and an old camera, but it’s been great to see her improve her setup and roll out new video ideas over her YouTube career. In today’s episode, we’re going to be breaking down a number of her viral videos and how she comes up with the ideas for the topics and film concepts for her videos, how to succeed with super minimal filming set up, working with ethical brands for sponsored videos, and so much more. Enjoy!

“The comment section is a treasure trove of information” - Erika Vieira

Growth can come in many shapes and sizes. Sometimes it’s slow and steady. Sometimes it’s all at once. This week’s guest, hair and beauty YouTuber Bianca Renee, turned an authentic moment into a viral hit which catapulted her into the curly hair niche she was meant for. We’re going to take a look behind-the-scenes to see how what she learned through her life prepared her for YouTube success, how she was able to turn a viral hit into a consistent channel, her experiences of working with brands like getting her face on an in-store ad, working with a manager and so much more!

“I don’t know any brand that only uses one influencer, so there’s no reason we all can’t succeed.”

Bianca says she started her youtube career by accident. At the time she was doing marketing and promotions for different companies and one day she had found some products that really worked for her curly hair. So she opened up her laptop and recorded a video about the rare find in her mother’s kitchen. That video went viral, hit a couple hundred thousand views in no time, and that gave her the idea to continue expanding on that thread, talking about how to apply the products and different things about curly hair. Even though that first real video went viral, she wasn’t all-in on YouTube yet. As a matter of fact, she didn’t follow up that video until 6 months later!

“I know I’m not the only one struggling with these things, so if I can reach someone else going through it, that’s what makes it worth it.”

When she started uploading twice a week that’s when she started to see the growth to her subscribers and engagement. About 2 years ago she committed to YouTube full-time when she realized that she could make more money at home focusing on making her curly hair videos. In this episode, she talks about her YouTube influencer journey, helping smaller YouTube influencers navigate the world of brand sponsorships, how to find and work with a manager to get you the best brand deals for your channel, and so much more! Enjoy!

I love talking to my successful bootcampers! I get to do two amazingly fun things: showcase these incredible women who I love so much, and also give you direct access to what made the biggest differences for them and grew their channels. Beauty YouTuber Michele Wang is here to share her journey from knitwear, to leaving her full-time job to pursue YouTube and her secrets for making videos built for engagement and growth!

“I can’t emphasize consistency enough! Your viewers start to depend on it.”

Michele came to the bootcamp in August 2018. She was getting burned out at her full-time job and saw the potential with YouTube as that income was going up. So she decided to join to capitalize on YouTube more and pursue going full-time. Before that, she was doing different things dabbling on YouTube. She would make knitwear videos but the process was slow and not sustainable so in February 2017, after moving to Las Vegas, she decided to switch her niche to beauty and makeup. Though she switched to makeup, she wasn’t putting much intention into niching or picking video topics, but a video recommendation she saw inspired her to join the bootcamp, and the rest is history.

“Treat YouTube like a business. Credit card debt is the worst way to fund your business!”

She had about 16k subscribers before joining the bootcamp. Now she has over 90k subscribers and is a full-time YouTuber, making money with AdSense and affiliates. The bootcamp gave her new tools and the confidence that the niche she picked was the right choice. In this episode we’ll talk about how she made the transition from her job to full-time on YouTube, her insane and consistent way of making videos, and her biggest takeaways from the bootcamp. Enjoy!

“Negativity doesn’t really bother me. I have pretty thick skin at this point, I don’t care.”

There’s no such thing as an overnight success, but every once in awhile, something happens that just makes you wonder. Like this week’s guest who decides to throw up a video, and not even optimizes thumbnails or descriptions, but 10 days later gets millions of views! Biochemist and YouTuber Kenna is here to break down that overnight success and she’s telling us why it was actually several years in the making, and giving you the clues to make that a process you can follow for your next viral hit!

“Once I stopped questioning myself, I started making videos that did a lot better.”

When Kenna started out on YouTube, she was looking for an outlet to answer the common questions she was getting from her skincare line customers - she started her own skincare line at 18 while she was still getting her degree. She wasn’t growing then, so she didn’t put much attention and effort into it. But one day she decided to record herself giving her Biochemist’s review of Jaclyn Hill lipstick, and that video ended up getting 1.4 million views! With that viral hit, she was forced to grow up as an influencer real fast. And when she followed it up with part 2 of the review, which got almost 1 million views, she decided to take her channel more seriously.

“I’m taking baby steps to grow to the level where my viral growth has gone.”

She’s now running her own skincare line that she sold to the natural skincare company she now works for and at 23 is overseeing a number of product lines, from quality control to distribution to retail outlets. She’s now at over 200k subscribers and is using the feedback from her followers and subscribers to upgrade her channel and how she approaches her content over time. In this episode, we’ll be talking about that viral hit, how she’s following it up to become a full-fledged YouTube influencer, and how you can use your superpowers to carve out a relevant and substantial niche for yourself on YouTube. Enjoy!

“I wouldn’t do content on someone else’s skincare brand because I wouldn’t be able to authentically speak about it.”

Part 2 of our amazing conversation with Natalia Taylor is here! In part one we dove deep into her origin story, and how her YouTube success forced her to change for the better. Now we’re diving into what videos solidified her comeback and we’re getting a front-row view into her genius for picking video ideas, how she creates content and the secrets for growth and making herself a hit machine! If you loved the last episode, this one will blow you away. We’re getting technical!

“If you make content that people are interested in, they will watch it and you’ll have job security.”

It may look simple and obvious now that she’s made a comeback and doubled her subscribers, but when she came back, she had a dead channel. Her old videos were getting a trickle of views, and the new her wasn’t jiving for some. Sometimes it was discouraging to see the subscriber numbers plummet when she posted new content. But she kept with it. She kept her positive attitude and eventually got to a turning point. She made a video on exposing America’s Next Top Model and that started her rise again. She maintained that momentum and struck gold again by hitting her most-watched video which was also a sponsored video about Zodiac Signs. It got over 5 million views! She wasn’t only back, but now, she’s sitting pretty at almost 1.8 million subscribers.

“Being original, new and innovative is always my #1 priority”

In this episode, we pick up from where we left off and talk about what videos sparked her comeback, her insanely genius process for coming up with video ideas, the surprising way she shoots and edits her videos and so much more. We also get a moment where she’s completely open and raw about her experience being a successful YouTube influencer, that you’re going to want to hear if you’re interested in going down the same path. Enjoy!

“I don’t consume that much content. I just produce it. That’s the beauty of being an artist.”
